Essential Beach Vacation Packing Tips
Beach Vacation Basics
Packing for a beach vacation can be a bit overwhelming, but with the right plan, you can still have everything you need without overpacking.
Start with the basics of this packing list. Use it as a guide to packing beach essentials and expand from there.
Then, double-check the weather forecast for your destination and adjust your packing accordingly.
If you’re heading to a tropical location, you’ll need lightweight clothing and plenty of sunscreen. If you’re going to a cooler beach, you’ll need to pack warmer clothing and maybe a light jacket.
Choosing the Right Luggage
Choosing the right luggage is so important yet so difficult when packing for a beach vacation.
While packing for a trip, I can’t tell you how many times I change out my luggage, backpack, and purses to figure out the perfect bags to bring. It’s legit insane.
You need to ensure you have enough space to pack all your essentials while keeping your carry-on luggage lightweight and easy to roll or carry.

We recommend using a lightweight, soft-sided suitcase or a backpack designed for travel. This is our all-time favorite travel backpack!
It’s super easy to carry, fits under the plane seat, and holds a TON of stuff in it.
When traveling with family, we’ve found that using packing cubes makes the most sense especially to keep everyone’s belongings organized and easy to find.
Again, pack only what you need for the trip. I know it’s hard but it’s definitely worth it.
It just takes a little practice of “letting go” and reminding yourself that you can usually buy whatever you forgot to pack at your destination.
Apparel and Footwear
Beach vacation essentials, of course, include cute clothes and proper footwear. You’ll need the right outfits for the right occasions while still packing light.
The easiest way to figure out what types of clothes you need is to first determine your itinerary and work backward from there.
Clothing for Different Weather
Bring clothes that will keep you cool and comfortable in the heat but also pack some things that will keep you warm in case the weather turns cooler.
There’s no need to pack a fancy blazer or sweatshirt unless you want to use it as a cover-up to a casual dress which totally comes in handy in freezing cold restaurants.
Here are some ideas of must-have beach wear:
- Bathing suits: Duh! It’s the beach! Bring at least two bathing suits so you can switch between them and let one dry while you wear the other.
- Cover-ups: A cover-up is a great way to protect your skin from the sun and to wear when you’re walking around the beach or going to a bar or restaurant.
- Shorts and skirts: Shorts and skirts are perfect for hot weather. Bring a couple of pairs of each to mix and match with different tops.
- Shirts and t-shirts: Lightweight, loose-fitting outfits and t-shirts are perfect for going souvenir shopping or out to dinner. Pack a mix of short-sleeved and long-sleeved shirts depending on your destination.
- Sweater: Even though you’re going to the beach, pack a sweater or light jacket in case the weather turns cooler or if you’re sitting in a cold restaurant.
- Pajamas: Comfortable pajamas are a must for any trip! These are my favorite tropical pjs. So on theme!
- Loungewear or Tracksuits: I love loungewear sets. They’re great for those in between moments when you just want to chill out in the A/C but you’re not quite ready for bedtime yet.

Footwear for Sand and Water
Oh boy the footwear… so many options! First of all, whatever shoes you pack, they need to be comfortable, period. It’s unlikely you’ll need stilettos for a beach vacation.
- Sandals: Sandals are a must-have for the beach. They’re easy to slip on and off and perfect for walking on the sand (obviously).
- Flip-flops: Lightweight and easy to pack, flip-flops are another must-have for any beach trip.
- Water shoes: If you’re planning on doing any water activities, such as snorkeling or kayaking, bring water shoes. They’ll protect your feet from rocks and other sharp objects.
- Sneakers: If you’re planning to do any hiking or exploring, pack a pair of tennis shoes. I usually just wear these on the plane because they’re typically the bulkiest shoes I need for a beach trip.
- Socks: Don’t forget to pack a few pairs of socks to wear with your sneakers.
Beach Day Essentials
When you’re planning for a day at the beach, there are a few essential items that you won’t want to forget.
In this section, we’ll cover the must-have items for any beach day, including sun protection and comfort items.
Sun Protection
Always, always protect your skin from the sun. You’d be surprised with how little time it takes to get overheated or sunburned at the beach.
People who aren’t used to being out in the sun that long will sometimes develop little bumps on their arms or legs that appear like tiny whelps.
That can be caused from your body not being used to the sun’s exposure.
- Sunscreen: Bring plenty of sunscreen with a high SPF rating to protect your skin from sunburns. Apply it liberally and often throughout the day, especially after swimming or sweating. Purchase a cream sunscreen and a spray sunscreen, and then alternate them throughout the day.
- UPF Shirt: The best investment you’ll make is buying a 50+ UPF shirt. It’ll save you and your family members from killer sunburns and will give you a break from having to lather on sunscreen every few hours.
- Beach Umbrella or Canopy: A beach umbrella or canopy will give you shade and protect you from the sun. Look for one that’s easy to set up and has a sturdy base to keep it from blowing away in the wind.
- Wide-brimmed Hat: A wide-brimmed hat will help protect your face and neck from the sun’s rays. Look for one that’s made from breathable materials to keep you cool and is also UPF.
- Portable Fans: Rechargeable handheld portable fans like this one or a turbo fan like this one are a game-changer when it comes to keeping you cool on the beach.
- Sunglasses: Polarized sunglasses are great for protecting your eyes from the glare of the ocean and pool. They also help prevent wrinkles and skin damage around the eyes.

Comfort Items
Spending a day at the beach is a blast, but it’s also super tiring and uncomfortable especially if you don’t come prepared.
Here are a few items that will help keep you comfortable:
- Beach Towel: A beach towel is a must-have for any beach day. Look for one large enough to lay on and absorbent enough to dry you off after a swim.
- Quick-Dry Towel: Once you use a quick-dry towel, you’ll never go back to a regular one. This one is our most beloved towel and it comes with us on every single trip no matter where we go. Why? Because we use it as a blanket on the plane, a picnic blanket, a beach towel, and loads of other things. It’s just plain awesome!
- Beach Bag: A beach bag is a must for carrying all of your beach day essentials. Look for one that’s large enough to hold your towel, sunscreen, snacks, water bottle, and one that has a zipper! Life is so much easier when stuff isn’t falling out of your bag all day!
- Beach Chairs: A comfortable beach chair is a must-have for relaxing and enjoying the view. Look for one that’s lightweight and easy to carry but also sturdy enough to support your weight. We love the ones that have backpack straps because they allow you to carry more things in your arms.
- Beach Blanket: A beach blanket is a great option if you plan to spend the day with friends or family. Look for one large enough to accommodate everyone and made from durable materials.
- Snacks and Water: Staying hydrated and fueled up is crucial for any beach day. People get HANGRY quickly when hanging out at the beach all day. Pack plenty of water and healthy snacks like fruit, nuts, and granola bars.
Hydration and Nutrition

Staying Hydrated
For everyone’s health and well-being, make sure you’re drinking enough water and electrolytes when out in the heat.
Dehydration can sneak up on you especially if you’re drinking alcohol in the sun. Remember to alternate one alcoholic beverage for one water and you’ll be good to go.
Also, always pack a reusable water bottle so it’s easy to make sure you always have water on hand.
You can fill it up at home before you leave, and then refill it at water fountains or concession stands throughout the day.
Snacks and Meals
When packing snacks and meals for the beach, it’s important to choose foods that are easy to transport and won’t spoil in the heat.
Some great options include fresh fruit, granola bars, and trail mix. If you want, bring a cooler to pack sandwiches or wraps, cheese sticks, and beer.
If you’re planning on grilling at the beach, bring a portable grill and all the necessary supplies like propane or charcoal, grilling utensils, and a portable tent for shade.
Pack pre-made salads or pasta dishes in a cooler for a quick and easy meal.
Don’t forget to bring plenty of beach towels to use as a picnic blanket or to dry off after swimming.
Personal Care Items
Don’t forget to pack your bathroom bag! This includes your toiletries, hygiene items, medications, make-up, and more.
I swear my bathroom items always take up the bulk of my suitcase no matter how hard I try to minimize the stuff.
Toiletries and Hygiene
Pack travel-sized toiletries to save space in your luggage and to avoid checked bag fees.
Here are some toiletries you won’t want to forget at home.
- Toothbrush, toothpaste, floss: You don’t want to neglect your dental hygiene while on vacation.
- Shampoo and conditioner: Saltwater and chlorine can be harsh on your hair, so it’s important to keep it clean and conditioned. Also, pack any other hair products you’ll need. I always use this leave-in conditioner by Lanza. It’s done wonders for my hair.
- Brush and comb: Keep your hair tangle-free with a brush and comb. This Wet Brush is perfect to for post-beach hair day as it’s gentle on your scalp when fighting those wind-blown tangles.
- Soap: Pack a bar of soap or body wash, but usually, hotels or condos provide you with soap, so you may want to skip this item.
- Deodorant: Stay fresh and odor-free in the hot and humid weather.
- Makeup: Pack only the essentials if you plan to wear makeup during your vacation.

Health and Safety
In addition to toiletries, you should also pack some health and safety items.
Side note, I’ve recently learned about this insulin cooler travel case which might be worth researching if you’re diabetic.
Here are some items you should consider packing:
- Sunscreen: Protect your skin from the harmful UV rays of the sun by applying sunscreen regularly. We love to use this tinted sunscreen by Cetaphil every day because it relieves redness while also being SPF 40.
- Lip balm or Chapstick: Keep your lips moisturized and protected from the sun with a lip balm that contains SPF.
- Hand sanitizer: Keep your hands clean and germ-free with a travel-sized hand sanitizer.
- Aloe vera and after-sun lotion: Soothe your skin after a long day in the sun with aloe vera and after-sun lotion.
- Insect repellent: Keep bugs at bay with insect repellent. Tiny gnats tend to come out at night in the summer. So annoying!
- Bandages: Pack some bandages in case of any cuts or blisters.
- Medications: Don’t forget to pack any necessary medications, such as allergy medicine or pain relievers.
Entertainment and Leisure
Going to the beach is all about relaxation and enjoyment. While the sun and sand can provide plenty of entertainment, it’s fun to bring along some extra entertainment options (especially for rainy beach days). Here are some ideas to keep you entertained during your beach vacation.
Books and E-Readers
If you’re a book lover, a beach vacation is the perfect opportunity to catch up on some reading. Whether you prefer to read physical books or use an e-reader like a Kindle, bring along some reading material. If you’re traveling with kids, bring along some age-appropriate books to keep them entertained.
Music and Games
Music is another great way to relax and unwind on the beach. Bring a portable speaker and create a “beach vibes” playlist of your favorite tunes. If you’re traveling with friends or family, you’ll definitely want to pack some games, such as cards or board games. Our family loves playing Taboo! These are great for when it’s raining at the beach, post-sunburn days, or late-night entertainment with some drinks.
Travel Tip! Don’t forget to pack chargers for all of the electronic devices, or else you’ll be dealing with kid AND adult meltdowns! Also, include an extra power bank or two so you can keep your phone charged while listening to your favorites jams at the beach.
Important Documents and Money
The first thing you do before ever leaving home is to double-check that you have all the necessary documents and money with you. Here are some tips on what you need to bring with you:
Identification and Travel Documents
Make sure you have your license, passport, or other identification documents with you. If you are traveling internationally, check with the embassy or consulate of the country you are visiting to see if there are any additional documents you need to bring, such as completing an “arrival form” in advance.
It is also a good idea to make a copy of your passport and keep it in a separate place, such as your luggage or with a trusted friend or family member. You just never know what can happen.
Travel Tip! Make sure your passport is SIGNED. Too many people have experienced fraud because their passports were unsigned.
Cash and Cards
Bring cash with you for emergencies or for purchases that may not accept credit cards. Also, bring a credit card or two with you, as they are widely accepted and can be used to withdraw cash from ATMs. Alert your bank or credit card company of your travel plans to avoid any issues with your accounts being frozen due to suspicious activity.
Travel Tip! Do NOT travel with a debit card. We recommend never using a debit card when traveling as it is too risky for fraudulent activity. Credit cards tend to have better fraud protection and alerts.
Documents | Money |
---|---|
Passport or ID | Cash for emergencies |
Copy of passport or ID | Credit card for purchases |
Additional travel documents (if necessary) | Credit card for ATM withdrawals |
Packing for Kids and Special Considerations
When it comes to packing for a beach vacation with kids, you’ll want to make sure you have everything you need to keep them safe, comfortable, and entertained. Here are some tips to help you pack for your little ones.
Children’s Beach Gear
First and foremost, you’ll want to ensure you have all the essential beach gear for kids. This includes:
- Swimwear: Pack at least two swimsuits for each child, so they can change into a dry one if needed.
- Sun protection: Sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses are a must to protect your child’s delicate skin and eyes from harmful UV rays.
- Beach tote: A sturdy beach tote is essential for carrying all of your child’s gear, including towels, toys, and snacks.
- Toys: Bring a variety of toys for your child to play with on the beach, such as sandcastle-building tools, beach balls, and frisbees.
- Beach shoes: Water shoes or sandals with good traction will protect your child’s feet from hot sand and sharp objects.

Special Items for Unique Needs
If your child has special needs, you’ll want to pack any necessary items to ensure they have a safe and enjoyable beach vacation. This may include:
- Safety gear: If your child has trouble swimming, consider bringing a life jacket or floaties to keep them safe in the water.
- Medication: If your child requires medication, make sure you bring enough for the entire vacation, along with any necessary medical supplies, such as an inhaler or EpiPen.
- Special food or drinks: If your child has dietary restrictions, make sure you pack plenty of snacks and drinks that meet their needs.
- Comfort items: If your child has a favorite blanket, stuffed animal, or other comfort item, make sure to pack it to help them feel at home in a new environment.
