Brr! Is it just me, or does winter seem to get colder every year? Cabin fever is real – and it hits hard when the temperature drops. I’ve got just the trick that’s saved our family’s sanity more times than I can count: warm winter getaways right here in the good ol’ USA.

While your neighbors are shoveling snow, you’re building sandcastles on a sun-soaked beach. Sounds like a dream, right? Well, pinch yourself, because it’s totally doable!

In this post, I’m spilling the beans on some of our favorite warm USA winter destinations.

These spots are guaranteed to thaw out those frozen toes and create memories that’ll last way longer than your tan lines.

So grab a hot cocoa (or a piña colada, if you’re feeling optimistic), and let’s dive into the best places to ditch your winter coat and soak up some vitamin D.

Key Takeaways

  • Diverse options: From beach paradises to desert adventures, the USA offers a variety of warm winter destinations suitable for families.
  • Plan ahead: Popular warm-weather spots can book up quickly for winter, especially during holidays. Make reservations early!
  • Pack smart: Even in warm destinations, evenings can be cool. Bring layers to ensure comfort throughout your trip.
  • Embrace local experiences: Each destination offers unique attractions, foods, and cultural experiences. Don’t be afraid to try something new!
  • Off-season perks: Visiting these spots in winter often means fewer crowds and lower prices compared to peak summer months.
  • Natural wonders: Many of these destinations offer beautiful landscapes and opportunities to connect (for FREE) with nature, from beaches to deserts.
  • Consider lesser-known spots: Places like Gulf Shores, AL and Gulfport, MS offer warm winter escapes without the crowds of more famous destinations.

1. The Florida Keys: A Tropical Paradise Without Leaving the States

Oh boy, where do I even start with the Florida Keys? This string of islands dangling off the southern tip of Florida is like a little slice of Caribbean heaven, minus the passport hassle.

You’ll feel like you just stumbled into some kind of portal to summer!

Here’s why the Keys are a winter winner for families:

  • Warm waters and white sand beaches: Perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and sandcastle competitions (which, by the way, can get surprisingly competitive in our family).
  • Unique wildlife encounters: From the tiny Key deer to the gentle manatees, there’s always something to spark wonder in little (and big) eyes.
  • Water sports galore: Kayaking, paddleboarding, jet skiing – you name it, they’ve got it.
  • Fresh seafood that’ll make your taste buds do a happy dance: Key lime pie, anyone?

Now, I’ll let you in on a little secret – Bahia Honda State Park. It’s this hidden gem with one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen.

Plan to spend an entire day there. Watch the sunset over the railroad bridge, hunt for seashells, and just be in the moment.

My Recommendation: Book your accommodations early if you’re planning to stay in Key West because everyone and their grandma loves to head south for the winter.

2. San Diego, California: Where Winter Feels Like Endless Summer

Ah, San Diego – or as I like to call it, the land of “wait, it’s winter?” With average winter temps hovering in the oh-so-comfy high 60s, it’s pretty much perfect for outdoor family fun all year round.

Here’s why San Diego tops our list for winter escapes:

  • Miles of gorgeous beaches: From the family-friendly Coronado to the surf-tastic La Jolla Shores, there’s a patch of sand for every mood.
  • World-famous attractions: The San Diego Zoo, Legoland, and SeaWorld are just a few of the heavy hitters that’ll have the kids bouncing with excitement.
  • Balboa Park: A one-stop-shop for culture, with museums, gardens, and even a mini train that never fails to delight the little ones.
  • Amazing Mexican food: Because nothing says “vacation” like fish tacos and fresh guacamole, am I right?

Be sure to rent bikes and cruise along the Mission Beach boardwalk. It’ll help to tire out the kids before bedtime and it’s a great way to catch the sunset and stop for ice cream along the way.

My Recommendation: While San Diego is generally warm, evenings can get a bit chilly. I learned this the hard way when I confidently packed nothing but a light blazer, shorts, and t-shirts one year. Do yourself a favor and pack a thick jacket, hoodie, or comfy oversized sweater for those sunset strolls!

3. Phoenix, Arizona: Desert Adventures and Winter Sun

a green field with mountains in the background in Phoenix and Scottsdale Arizona

Instead of being bundled up in five layers and looking like the kid from Christmas Story who can’t get his arms down, what about heading to Phoenix instead?

Here, you’ll be slathering on sunscreen and debating whether it’s too hot for a midday hike instead of scrapping ice off your windshield.

Why Phoenix is a winter winner:

  • Consistently sunny days with temps in the 70s: Perfect for outdoor adventures without the summer scorchers.
  • Incredible desert landscapes: From Camelback Mountain to the Sonoran Desert, nature’s showing off big time here.
  • World-class resorts with epic pools: Because sometimes, vacation is all about that pool life.
  • Unique attractions like the Desert Botanical Garden and the Musical Instrument Museum: Trust me, these places are way cooler than they sound!

Don’t miss watching the sunset from the “Hole-in-the-Rock” formation, with the city lights twinkling in the distance… it’s totally breathtaking.

And, you can make it a game with the kids and call it a “big desert expedition.”

My Recommendation: The desert air is dry—like, really dry. The first time we visited, we woke up feeling like we’d been gargling sand. Now, we never go without a big ol’ bottle of lotion, eye drops, and some saline nasal spray. They’re not the sexiest vacation accessories but trust me; your skin will thank you!

4. Hawaii (Big Island): Tropical Bliss with a Side of Volcano

a green field with mountains in the background

Alright, I know what you’re thinking – “Hawaii? For a family vacation? In this economy?” But hear me out.

The Big Island of Hawaii packs a big punch in winter and is loaded with tons of activities to do.

Here’s why the Big Island is worth the splurge:

  • Perfect weather: We’re talking mid-70s to low 80s, with gentle trade winds keeping things comfy.
  • Incredible diversity: Black sand beaches, active volcanoes, lush rainforests, and snow-capped mountains (yes, really!).
  • Rich cultural experiences: Luaus, hula lessons, and some of the friendliest locals you’ll ever meet.
  • Once-in-a-lifetime adventures: Where else can you go from snorkeling with manta rays to stargazing atop a 13,000-foot mountain in one day?

Don’t forget that “island time” is a real thing here. If you’re planning to go with a jam-packed itinerary, you might want to scale back your expectations a bit.

Just remember, sometimes the best memories come from the unplanned moments. Slow down, take it easy, and enjoy the small moments with family.

My Recommendation: Don’t forget to pack a light jacket. Sounds crazy for Hawaii, I know, but if you’re planning to visit Volcanoes National Park or go stargazing on Mauna Kea, you’ll need to pack warm clothes. It’s actually pretty chilly in Hawaii in winter, not to mention it’s always windy.

5. New Orleans, Louisiana: Where Winter Gets a Little Spicy

Jackson Square in New Orleans, Louisiana

Again, you’ll probably think I’m nuts about suggesting this, but hear me out. The weather down south is mild, and there are actually way more kid-friendly things to do in the Big Easy than you might expect!

Why NOLA is a winter wonder:

  • Mild temperatures: We’re talking 60s and 70s, perfect for exploring without breaking a sweat.
  • Festive atmosphere: From holiday decorations to year-round party vibes, the city just feels alive.
  • Incredible food: Beignets, gumbo, po’boys – your taste buds are in for a treat (and so are the kids’!).
  • Unique experiences: Streetcar rides, swamp tours, and live jazz in the streets – it’s like stepping into another world.
Want flexibility in your New Orleans Itinerary?

Whatever you do, don’t plan your days around Bourbon Street! Instead, explore a few streets over in the Frenchman area, Jackson Square, and the French Market.

Don’t be afraid to travel outside of the French Quarter area. Take the trolly down to the Warehouse District and Garden District.

The kids always have fun on the trolly, and it’s a great way to see New Orleans without having to drive everywhere or worry about parking.

Also, going to the New Orleans Aquarium is one of our favorite family things to do.

My Recommendation: You can’t visit New Orleans without eating beignets at Café du Monde. Yes, it’s touristy. Yes, there might be a line. But watching your kids try to eat those powdered sugar-covered pillows of deliciousness without making a mess? Comedy gold. (Spoiler alert: It’s impossible. Bring extra napkins!)

6. South Padre Island, Texas: The Lone Star State’s Beach Paradise

a beach with waves and clouds

Y’all, let me tell you about South Padre Island. This little slice (literally a tiny sliver of an island) of Texas heaven is like the state’s best-kept secret – well, at least when it comes to winter family getaways.

Here you’ll get miles of pristine beaches, warm Gulf waters, and enough sunshine to make you forget what month it is.

Here’s why South Padre Island is a winter winner:

  • Balmy temperatures: We’re talking mid-60s to 70s, perfect for beach days without the summer crowds.
  • Endless outdoor activities: From sandcastle building lessons (yes, that’s a real thing!) to kiteboarding, there’s never a dull moment.
  • Amazing wildlife: The birding here is world-class, and you might even spot a dolphin or two!
  • Laid-back, small-town vibe: It’s the perfect antidote to big city stress.

Try your hand at surf fishing, but just know that it requires patience (something our family isn’t exactly known for). Kids tend to get antsy after about an hour of zero bites, so have a backup plan just in case!

My Recommendation: While South Padre is known for its spring break parties, winter is all about family fun. But if you’re planning a trip around the holidays, book early! The secret’s getting out about this winter beach paradise.

7. Santa Fe, New Mexico: A Desert Winter Wonderland

a city with a flag on top

This high-desert gem is full of surprises. While it might not be beach weather, Santa Fe’s winter charm is in a league of its own.

Why Santa Fe sizzles in winter:

  • Sunny days and crisp nights: Perfect for outdoor adventures without the summer heat.
  • Rich cultural experiences: From Native American art to Spanish colonial history, it’s like a living museum.
  • Incredible food scene: Green chile everything? Yes, please!
  • Unique winter activities: Think hiking in the snow-dusted Sangre de Cristo Mountains or soaking in natural hot springs.

There’s this thing called “farolito walks” on Christmas Eve. Basically, the whole town lines the streets with paper lanterns, and everyone walks around admiring the lights and singing carols. Sounds magical, right?

My Recommendation: Don’t skip the hot chocolate at Kakawa Chocolate House. It’s like nothing you’ve ever tasted – rich, spicy, and probably ruined regular hot cocoa for us forever. Sorry not sorry!

8. Gulf Shores, Alabama: Southern Charm Meets Beach Bliss

Let me tell you about a little slice of paradise that often flies under the radar: Gulf Shores, Alabama. Did you even know that Alabama has beaches? Yes, yes it does!

And in winter? It’s like stumbling upon a secret summer tucked away in the heart of the South.

Here’s why Gulf Shores is a winter wonder:

  • Mild temperatures: We’re talking 60s most days, perfect for beach strolls and outdoor fun.
  • Miles of sugar-white sand beaches: Seriously, it’s like walking on powdered sugar!
  • Family-friendly attractions: From the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo to the Gulf State Park, there’s no shortage of kid-approved activities.
  • Fresh seafood galore: Because nothing says vacation like a shrimp po’boy with your toes in the sand.

Give kayaking a try in the Little Lagoon, play putt-putt at Pirate’s Island, or go hunting for seashells. With so many family-friendly activities at this winter beach getaway, you’ll want to make Gulf Shores an annual Christmas destination.

Also, while it’s warmer than up North, you still need to pack a light jacket for evenings. And if you’re planning a trip around the holidays, book early. This hidden gem isn’t so hidden anymore!

p.s.-  This condo is our favorite!

My Recommendation: Don’t miss the Annual Oyster Cook-Off at The Hangout if you’re there in November. You may be a bit skeptical about taking kids to an oyster festival. I mean, what kid likes oysters, right? But between the live music, the cooking demonstrations, and the surprisingly kid-friendly activities, it’ll be a hit.

9. Gulfport, Mississippi: The Secret Coast’s Winter Retreat

Mississippi Gulf Coast Christmas

Visiting Gulfport in southern Mississippi might come as a surprise to most of you, but this Gulf Coast town is quite charming, with loads of holiday activities to get you in the Christmas spirit.

Why Gulfport should be on your winter getaway radar:

  • Comfortable temperatures: Think mid-60s most days – not too hot, not too cold, just right for exploring.
  • Beautiful beaches without the crowds: 26 miles of sandy shores practically to yourself!
  • Rich history and culture: From the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center to the Mississippi Aquarium and holiday production shows, there’s learning disguised as fun around every corner.
  • Incredible seafood scene: Fresh-off-the-boat seafood that’ll make your taste buds do a happy dance.

Now, let me tell you about a little adventure we stumbled into on our last trip. We heard about this place called Ship Island, part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore.

It’s this uninhabited barrier island you can reach by ferry. Sounds exotic, right? Well, we decided to play explorer for a day.

The ferry ride itself was an adventure – we saw dolphins! But the real fun started when we landed on this pristine island.

It was like we’d been dropped into a castaway movie, but with convenient facilities and a park ranger. The kids went wild, collecting shells, building epic sandcastles, and pretending to be shipwrecked pirates.

Gulfport is generally warmer than the North, but winter evenings are a bit chilly. Pack a few layers, and you’ll be set for whatever adventures come your way!

My Recommendation: If you’re visiting around the holidays, check out Gulfport Harbor Lights Winter Festival. It’s like stepping into a winter wonderland… but you can still wear flip-flops! Also, don’t miss the Beau Rivage’s annual Christmas Production Show.
